Abstract

Adolescents are an important target population with close to half of the world's population that needs special attention because of their influence on the condition of health and well-being of society globally. Pregnancy in adolescents is one of the challenges in the health sector faced by all countries in the world including Indonesia. A retrospective cohort study was carried out in Department of Child Health Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung using secondary data and medical record with the aim of identifying neonatal morbidity and mortality born to adolescent mothers and young adults in RSHS from March-May 2018. Data was analyzed using logistic regression. Six hundred eighty-four neonates were studied, 306 born to adolescent mothers and 378 were born to young adult mothers. Logistic regression showed that neonates born to adolescent mothers are at a risk of experiencing stillbirth 2.7 times compared to neonates born to young adult mothers (RR 2.66 [95% CI: 1,402-5,047]) p = 0,002. The risk of neonates from adolescent mothers to experience low bith weight 1.25 times (RR: 1.25 [95% CI: 1.07-1.46]) p = 0.005, preterm infants 1.2 times (RR: 1.2 [95% CI: 1,200-1,502]) p = 0.008 and neonatal asphyxia 1.5 times (RR: 1.48 [95% CI: 1.15-1.91]) p = 0.002 compared to neonates of young adult mothers compared to neonates born to young adult mothers. Perinatal death and stillbirth, preterm infants, low birth weight, asphyxia in neonates born to adolescent mothers is higher than neonates born to young adult mothers.
